Visiting Laura in Santa Cruz, November 14, 2010 - Kay, David, and I drove down to Santa Cruz to visit with Laura for the afternoon. We went to lunch at Dharma's, then enjoyed a nice walk down to the beach and back.

Visiting the J & J Ranch, September 17, 2010 - On the day we returned home from Mammoth Lakes, we stopped by the ranch that Jude and Jennifer Katsch and their three sons, Forest, Orion, and Phoenix, are gradually building into their castle in the hills. The ranch is in the Sierra foothills outside of Merced. I can see that to live here happily, among one of the requirements would be not to find fine red dust a nuisance. I had not visited Jude or Jennifer in over 10 years, and during this time their family had grown.

Mission Peak, August 29, 2010 - Eight of us (Marty Goodman, Michi Lee, Zach Kaplan, Stella Hackell, Frank Paysen, Ron Bobb, David Bushnell, and I) gathered by various means at the trailhead for Mission Peak and proceeded to climb the peak and hike a short tour of the lands on the seldom-visited northeast side of the Mission Peak Preserve. We climbed the Peak Meadow and Horse Heaven Trails and descended the Hidden Valley Trail. (Distance: 8.8 miles; Climbing: 2800 feet)

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, August 2010 - David Bushnell, Frank Paysen, and I hiked a circuit in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. We visited the highest and lowest points in the park (on trails). The most interesting parts were walking through the old growth groves and crossing the San Lorenzo River (twice) on the Buckeye Trail at the southern end of the park. The least interesting was hiking up the sandy, horse-trodden trail to the Observation Deck. (Distance: 7.8 miles; Climbing: 1200 feet)
-
Sanborn Park, August 2010 - Stella Hackell, Frank Paysen, David Bushnell, and I hiked a long loop at Sanborn Park. Starting from the Peterson Grove parking lot we hiked up the San Andreas Trail to the Sanborn Trail and continued on the Skyline Trail south to Sunnyvale Mountain. We returned on the Skyline and Sanborn Trails, finishing on the Peterson Trail. (Distance: 8.5 miles; Climbing: 2200 feet)

Phleger Estate, July 2010 - We parked the car in Huddart Park and hiked down to Richard's Road. We took a wrong turn and ended up at the end of Raymundo Way before we realized we were off-course. Once back on Richard's Road we hiked north until we reached the fork with the Miramontes Trail that we took back down into the forest. From Miramontes Trail we took Mt Redondo Trail and Lonely Trail until we reached Skyline Blvd. and Richard's Road. We hiked all the way down Richard's Road and then took a couple of short trails back to the car in Huddart Park. (Distance: 6.8 miles; Climbing: 1600 feet)
-
Castle Rock State Park, July 2010 - David and I started at the main Castle Rock State Park parking area and hiked up to Castle Rock itself, then down to Goat Rock and continued on the Ridge Trail down to the Trail Camp where we took a break. We returned on the Saratoga Gap Trail along a rocky ledge, past Castle Rock Falls, and returned to the start. (Distance: 6.5 miles; Climbing: 1200 feet)
