Amtrak Cross-Country, July, 1979 - David and Bill Bushnell took a trip by Amtrak from San Francisco to Washington D.C. It was an adventure we took at roughly the nadir of the American love affair with train travel. We enjoyed everything from white linens in the dining car to magnificent scenery viewed through our scratched, plastic-coated windows, stifling hot conditions in the dome car, non-working entertainment buttons in our compartment, no water in the toilets half the time, and a surly porter (who kicked us out of an unoccupied compartment in the only carriage with working A/C). Three hot and sweaty days on the rails. I hear the trains are better these days.
Washington D.C., July 1979 - These are photos from our 2 full days of touring Washington D.C. Since we had arrived during a muggy heat-wave, we spent most of our time indoors where even the Carter Administration-mandated indoor temperature of 78F was a relief from the 95F plus humidity outdoors.
Visiting Uncle Rob's Family, July 1979 - After we left Washington D.C. we took Amtrak (The Patriot) to Stamford, CT to visit Uncle Rob, Aunt Nancy and their family in Darien, CT where at the time the weather was cooler than D.C. but no less humid. While there we toured David's old stomping grounds, Greenwich and Mead Point. The next day all of us traveled up to their house in Salisbury, CT. On our way back to Darien the day after we stopped for dinner at John and Nancy Hagmayer's in Brookfield, CT.
New York City, July 1979 - After leaving Uncle Rob's in Darien, we took the commuter train into New York City to begin a couple days of touring. Most of these photos were taken on the Circle Line tour.
