Drive to Salt Lake City, September 1987 - David and Bill drove from Palo Alto to Salt Lake City by way of CA-88, US-395, I-80, US-50, NV-278, and I-80. We stopped for the night in Reno, NV and Elko, NV.
Liberty Pass, September 17, 1987 - David and Bill checked out of their Motel 6 room in Elko, NV and drove up Lamoille Canyon to the end of the road. From there they hiked up to Lamoille Lake and then to Liberty Pass (10450ft) before turning around and hiking back down again.
Salt Lake City, September, 1987 - Bill, David, and Kay stayed at the Salt Lake City Hilton to attend a conference on Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB), a condition that David recently acquired.
Utah Highway 92, September 20, 1987 - David and Bill left Salt Lake City by way of UT-92, American Fork Canyon Rd., the Sundance Resort, and Alpine Scenic Highway. Just as the sun was setting we stopped at the Bridalveil Falls Cable Car, the "Worlds Steepest Cable Tram", taking the glass-bottomed tram 1500 feet up to the lodge perched on the edge of a cliff high above the canyon. Unfortunately, it was too dark to get good photos. The tram was closed in the 1990s, and the remaining cables taken down a few years ago.
Delta Utah, September 21, 1987 - David and Bill spent the night in the Cedar Inn in Delta, UT. The next morning we drove 100 miles west across the vast wasteland of western Utah to Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada.
Lehman Caves, September 21,1987 - David and Bill took a ranger-led tour of Lehman Caves at the base of Great Basin National Park.
Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, September 21, 1987 - After touring Lehman Caves and eating lunch at the small cafe inside the park--I distinctly recall eating a grilled cheese sandwich, the only thing without meat on the menu--we drove up the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive to take an afternoon hike in the high country.
Bristlecone Forest and Icefields, September 21, 1987 - Bill and David hiked from the top of the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive up to the Bristlecone Forest and Icefield. If we had had all day we might have tried to hike up Wheeler Peak, but for an afternoon hike, this easier hike would do well. As expected the scenery was beautiful. We were the only hikers on the trail.
Highway US-6 Across Nevada, September, 1987 - We drove from Great Basin National Park to Ely, NV where we spent the night. The next morning we drove US-6 southwest across the heart of Nevada, entering California near Montgomery Pass. We then took CA-120 west to Lee Vining where we spent the night at The Murphy Motel.
North Dome, September 23, 1987 - Bill and David drove over Tioga Pass from Lee Vining, stopped at Tenaya Lake, and continued on to Porcupine Flat where we hiked the North Dome Trail mostly down to the summit of North Dome where we lingered for a while to enjoy the view into and across Yosemite Valley and Tenaya Canyon. We returned to the car the same way.
