A thin layer of crust atop a void.

One reason we did not venture too close to the crater rim is that the ground was hollow beneath our feet. By tapping our sticks we could hear a hollow sound. The hardened lava flow is not thick or dense, being filled with many gas bubbles. The bubbles also make broken shards of lava as sharp as glass.
