Our original plan was to take the footpath from the River Trail across the San Joaquin River and up to Garnet Lake. But, while we found evidence of past encampments at this trail junction, we found no dry way across the San Joaquin, and the river seemed to flow too deeply and swiftly to risk wading. (It was also too cold to get wet!) So, after some discussion we decided to press on to Thousand Island Lake and then decide whether to return on the John Muir Trail or retrace our steps on the River Trail (or take the High Trail). An already-long hike would get a few miles longer!
