Old (top) and New (bottom) chains at 12 inches

Notice that the new (bottom) chain's pin center is aligned exactly with the "24" mark (12 inches), but the worn (top) chain is elongated 2/20 of an inch, or about 0.83%. Rule of thumb suggests chains should be replaced before they become elongated by 1% or longer, that the drivetrain (sprockets and rings) can become damaged by running a chain with more elongation.
