I actually stopped a couple of times to check the brakes for overheating using a sniff test. Fortunately, the brakes only got hot enough to emit a slight "hot brakes" odor but no burning or smoke (or reduced braking ability) was detected.
The top half of the road is paved, but it is very steep. Combined with the thin air there is not much aerodynamic drag or brake cooling effect, hence the advice to drive the road only with a 4wd vehicle with an ultra-low gear. Overheating the brakes while descending is the main danger.
